Where a site would ask her to describe herself, for example, she wrote things like “award-winning journalist” and “future thinker. These answers weren’t matching her up with the types of people she wanted to meet because they didn’t accurately describe her personality. Instead, they described how she’d want someone interviewing her for a job to see her.

But the answer to her dating conundrum wasn’t simply being more honest and taking time to actually answer the questions, she found out. Because even if she decided to be completely frank in her answers, her matches probably wouldn’t be. Research supports her idea. Another study estimated that the average person lies during one in five of his or her daily interactions.

With hundreds of candidates in hand, both had to then filter the field: Webb created a sophisticated spreadsheet, and McKinlay went on 88 dates. In the end, each found a spouse.

All of this is part of a new approach to life, as a thing to be hacked and optimised by way of a quantified self. People track what they eat, the hours they work, the items they own and countless other details, hoping to experience better health, improved productivity and greater contentment. In the case of dating, trying to optimise can be foolishly naive and misunderstand the nature of the task.

Consider the case of former software engineer Valerie Aurora, who in returned to the dispiriting task of online dating. This time, she hoped she might make the experience palatable, fun even, by hacking dating. However, with experience, Aurora realised that she had been too inflexible about dealbreakers.

The only weak point in her delivery was not making this clear from the beginning of the speech. Once you have listened to the whole thing and look back, it is easy to understand the purpose of the speech.

However, if you were only to watch the first five minutes of the talk, the purpose may not be very clear. The thesis of How I Hacked Online Dating is to inform people how they can use data analysis to improve their chances of finding the right partner through online dating.

Through a series of lists, prioritising and scoring 72 points to be exact , Amy stated a score of was the minimum at which she would date someone. Oppositely, Webb analysed the opinion people were having on her profile and learnt that the most popular people on dating sites, where those who described themselves in smaller paragraphs, with more optimistic wording and came across more approachable.

Once Amy made the changes to her profile, the emails started coming through! Marketeers could take tips from this to reach customers.

Before giving up, she did some research on how to make her profile more attractive. Webb soon became the most popular person online. Similarly, a new study from online dating site eHarmony has found that when filling out a dating profile the words used can greatly affect the experience. The study, which involved 12, members, found a list of keywords that make a profile more desirable to the opposite sex. Wired website conducted a similar study on how to write the perfect online dating profile.

Using data from dating sites OK Cupid and Match. Looking at the pictures of OK Cupid’s top profiles Wired found wacky photos were unattractive, and suggested swapping your profile picture regularly to appear fresh.
